This is the entire problem and focus of this entire conversation: If our job is to assume that we don't matter to the company in the slightest, why should we work like we believe they value us?
In generations past, there was an expectation that hiring someone was a permanent choice. Not that circumstance couldn't change, but once you'd initially proven yourself, your job was inherently long term. My grandfather was a CPA at the same company for 40 years. If you go 40 months today without a reorg, downsizing, layoff, or requiring a new job just to continue growing, you've done good.
So if we all know that our jobs are NEVER safe EVER, why should we be giving up our lives, health, and more for these companies. THAT is the question that these younger generations are asking. And it's a good f%#@ing question.
